References are made to the need to smooth fluctuations in income or to achieve the least cost method of treating risk.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the reader to the terminology of bankruptcy as well as to present recent data pertaining to trends and causes of business failures. The figures presented herein are of a general nature and it is hoped that sufficient interest will be generated to spur further research into this important area of inquiry.
